Lest we forget the 3,000,000 birds shot in Malta!
Very well done to the Federation for Hunting and Conservation - Malta, for its preparation of a report to prove the local
traditional pastimes of hunting and trapping sustainable. Also very well done to Silvio Borg for his letter (as
captioned above) lest we forget how this report can be used to discredit once and for all, the infamous Natalino Fenech's
fairy tale book which had claimed that over 3,000,000 birds are shot over the Maltese Islands every year. However,I
would like to add, lest we forget, the huge damage the "book" (which is how it is still referred to even today by
some gullible tourists who visits our islands) did to tourism. We must not forget that the patriotic Maltese editor
of the book, besides making money from the book sales proceeds, even dared to circulate the book to travel agents abroad in
a disgraceful attempt at blackmail by hitting out at the tourist industry - the mainstay of our islands' economy. Mr
Fenech, who in one instance, even wrote that he wouldn't mind employees in the local tourist industry losing their livelihood
simply because they are hunting enthusiasts, must be the number one enemy of our delicate tourist industry. Will
the Minister of Tourism, please take note. Lest you may have overlooked these facts. Daniel Xriha Qormi
Note that this Malta Independent letter to the editor is referring to this book below, FATAL FLIGHT: The Maltese
Obsession With Killing Birds. It is an invaluable book to add the collection of every birder's library. It takes
an in-depth look at the history of hunting in Malta with tables of birds killed, trapped and stuffed and mounted. Diagrams
and graphs. Photos and much more. It discusses the Government politics on hunting. A MUST if you want to learn
more about the problem of hunting in the Maltese Islands and if you are interested to stop this evil of bird killing.
