Dear Prime Minister Adami,

In the past your private office has chosen to ignore letters expressing the worldwide concern over the brutal and blatant illegal hunting and trapping which your executive seems unable or unwilling to prevent.

As elected representative of the people of Malta, and head of a government which soon aspires to join a wider European family, it is time that you took public notice of the vehement criticism from home and abroad over the 'wild west' atmosphere which seems to rule unchecked at certain times of year.

The direct parallel with America is intended. The Americans effectively wiped out the buffalo, and many other native mammal and bird species; your island the Maltese falcon and other endemic flora and fauna. Your government must take firm action before any further irreparable damage is done to the whole fragile balance of European migrating bird populations.

We urge you to listen at last to those who have only the sustainable natural future of your islands at heart. Apart from the tolerable limits of current tourism capacity; and the future of eco-tourism in your ideal location and climate; no one will want to visit a country where the landscape is barren and no birds sing.

Please respond to this criticism in the spirit in which it is made. We urge you to take this, and all similar letters seriously. Not all those who are concerned with this unacceptable threat to bird conservation are capable of expressing themselves perfectly in English; or have the time to compose individual texts; but the content and sentiments of this letter reflect our views entirely.
