Ministry for Home Affairs

THE FACTS

[Updates or additional information - from whatever source - is very welcome! doc 01.02.2002]

The Minister for Home Affairs, who are responsible after all for law enforcement policy, sent a standard reply form back to Proact last year (the gaps filled out by hand) as follows:

"....your communication is receiving due consideration, and the official dealing with the matter will not fail to establish contact with you, if necessary."

20. April 2001

Almost 10 months later we can only conclude that the "official" concerned is so hopelessly overworked that that he or she has not yet got around to "establishing contact"; or simply decided that it wasn't "necessary" to reply to our concerns.

(Or did they just "forget"?)

IT IS TIME TO TAKE MORE THAN A PASSING INTEREST

The Minister for Home Affairs
Dr. Tonio Borg

Dear Mr Borg,

Your lack of any argued response to concerned conservationists worldwide over the continued widespread and illegal massacre of migrant birds is unacceptable.

Your Ministry is directly responsible for the Police Corps. and thereby for the implementation of laws which are continually and blatantly flouted on Malta.

It is to be hoped that the bloody and senseless scenes which are regularly reported in the Maltese and international press, and the growing wave of protest among the citizens of your islands, will persuade you to give the matter a greater priority. We suggest you take counsel with your colleagues in the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Tourism; Malta's reputation has taken some nasty knocks in the past year; and economic consequences will follow.

We urge you this time to take or concerns, and all similar letters, seriously. Not all Europeans are capable of expressing themselves perfectly in English; or have the time to compose individual texts; but the content and sentiments of this letter reflect our views entirely.

Yours sincerely,
