After almost a year of campaigning by the PROACT Team and our many other supporters worldwide a new protest wave is up and
running for 2002. Following the Massacre of St. Thomas's Bay on 20. January 2002 the population of Malta has been
sensibilised to the barbarism of their so-called hunters; and to the worldwide wave of outrage directed at their island.
For PROACT these - sad but not unwelcome - developments are a signal to redouble our efforts and bring home
to the Maltese authorities what the majority of their citizens already know. Namely: ALL forms of illegal trapping
and hunting have NO place in an educated and civilised society and must be stamped out. We must encourage the government
and their executive arm to accept this self-evident fact and finally take strong and consistent measures to put an end to
this senseless depletion of Europe's natural resources. We must also urge them to task all ecological bodies on
their islands to draw up a blueprint for the survival of Malta's flora and fauna; and establish whether or not hunting IN
ANY LEGAL FORM can continue on a basis of natural regeneration and sustainability. To this end we provide, on the
following pages, draft texts to the responsible authorities and opinion-fromers on the islands. - The
President of Malta - The Prime Minister - The Minister for Foreign Affairs - The Minister for Home
Affairs - The Minster for Tourism - The Minister for the Environment - The Commissioner of Police
and you are encouraged to write individually to - The Times of Malta - The Malta Independent
Texts are under the links on the left.
We also encourage all birders who have the time and money to spend some time on Malta this year and show that Eco-tourism
can pay. Leave a crad wherever you pay a bill with "This Tourist is a Birder" printed on it. Combine business and
pleasure and support the
AUTUMN 2002 MALTA MIGRATION BIRD CAMP
This is the big chance to again wear your 'I'm migrating to Malta - please don't shoot me' T-Shirts! Perhaps the
BIRD TOUR OPERATORS can show some commitment and SLASH PRICES for travel to Malta during migration windows ?!?
