Minister for the Interior

The Game Fund, the organisation which is the main weapon against illegal trapping and hunting, do a very good job but have limited resources. They are answerable to the Minister for the Interior, Mr Christodoulos Christodoulou and not to the Minister for Agriculture and Environment as might be expected.

Mr Christodoulou is not noted for his energy in combatting the trappers; indeed it has been reported that he has put the brakes on the activities of the Game Fund in the past.

The time is now ripe, where the preparations for Cyprus' accession to the European Union are so immediate, to take a firm line in implementing the EU Birds and Habitats directives to which your government have pledged themselves. Indeed consequent enforcing of your existing laws would be sufficient to

We are aware that the Game Fund is limited in its resources but they do an excellent job. It is however sad to hear reports that you, as responsible Minister, are not giving them your whole-hearted support. We hope that these reports are incorrect; it is otherwise difficult to understand what motive you might have for not pursuing a hard line in this matter.

In the light of the increased efforts of the British authorities in the Sovereign Base Areas to crack down on this criminal and brutal activity, it would be timely for the Cypriot authorities to take similar and concerted action in parallel.
